Moonshine

Meeting. Loving. Losing. Moonshine, Or The Seduction Plot is the story of an apprenticeship in sex and love. The novella and short stories span puberty, a rape at 18 on a train in Belgium, a spate of abusive boyfriends and a final eleventh-hour romance.

The novella begins with a promising relationship online. Almost immediately, the relationship is threatened by long, pandemic-induced separations. Nevertheless, the  partners continue to meet in New York City, Serbia, Michigan, Malta, England, Peru, Mexico and South Africa. Traveling tests their mettle as well as their commitment. And, despite Covid and a failing heart, they are determined to prevail.

Auxiliary scenes of disastrous solo-parenting and stays in a psychiatric ward for depression bubble up from the deep well of recollection.

Fittingly, the vagaries of memory are explored. The way that remembrance can bend and writhe and lie. The way that it can disappear as if the event had never happened. The way that no story is ever complete or true.

These pieces from Moonshine have been recently shortlisted and/or accepted for publication:

  • “Pornography” was short-listed for the U.K.’s Hammond House Literary Prize and is included in the 2026 Anthology entitled Secrets.

  • “Cloudspotting” was published by Heart on Our Sleeves Press in 2026 in its Show and Tell-themed issue.

  • The short story “Head Trip” was short-listed for The Letter Review Short Story Prize.
